Pipes featured in new Hockey Night in Canada theme
It’s difficult for those living in most other countries to understand, but, during the NHL hockey season, “Hockey Night in Canada” is the most watched weekly television program in that country, and now its new theme song features the sound of Highland pipes.
“Canadian Gold” was the winning entry by Colin Oberst of Alberta, after a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation competition that saw nearly 15,000 entries. The competition for a new original theme song came after a royalties dispute over the previous theme.
Oberst received $100,000 for his new anthem, which one of the judges chose because of its strong Celtic sound.
Hockey Night in Canada airs on Saturday nights and features two games. The old theme song was probably the most recognized Canadian-made song after the country’s national anthem.
It’s not bad. I always thought the Good Ol hockey game” was kind of hokey
Great news and Congrats to Colin. For the UK readers Hockey night in Canada” would be like BBC’s “Match of the Day” .”
It should be noted that Rob and Sandy Campbell of the Mudmen are the pipers in the tune. They are from Ontario and have played with traditional pipe bands such as Strathroy Legion, and SL 78th Frasers See more about it at http://www.mudmen.ca
