Piping Live! kicks off 2008 festival with program preview

The Glasgow International Piping Festival, AKA Piping Live!, officially kicked off its fifth year with a sneak preview of the full agenda, which will include a focus on females in piping and a decidedly edgier feel with several electronic acts coming on board during the seven-day event, August 11-17 in Glasgow.

“Girls and Gracenotes” is a new full-day “celebration of piping and the fairer sex” on August 14, with recitals and a concert from Northumbrian piper, Kathryn Tickell. The second “World’s Shindig” after the World Pipe Band Championships on August 16 will feature performances from Deaf Shepherd, Skerryvore and Beolach at the Barrowlands.

Organizers stated that Piping Live! 2008 will also feature more familiar events, including the International Piping Concert on August 15; a National Youth Pipe Band Concert at George Square; and a Gaelic Piping Night on August 13.

A full agenda of events will be posted on the festival’s website in the next few weeks.

Since 2003, Piping Live! has become more popular than the World’s itself with many pipers and drummers. The influx of non-Scottish pipe bands competing at the event has made the festival a major week on the piping and drumming calendar.

“To be able to bring such phenomenal piping talent together for a week of world class entertainment is truly a delight,” Festival Director Roddy MacLeod said. “We have many more artists to announce over the coming months and I look forward to welcoming them to Glasgow for a piping hot event!”
