Pre-Qualifying Bands for Grade 1 World’s Final Determined
The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA) has determined which member Grade 1 that qualify for the Final at the World Pipe Band Championships on August 16 in Glasgow.
Six bands pre-qualify based on points accumulated in a table system based on the Scottish and European Pipe Band Championships held earlier this year.
Joining these RSPBA member bands are two “overseas” bands, the 78th Fraser Highlanders (Canada) and Simon Fraser University (Canada), which get through based on attaining a prize at last year’s World’s.
In 2002, because of the diversity of bands gaining prizes at major championships, the RSPBA added a spot for another pre-qualified band. Also unlike 2002, the St. Laurence O’Toole Pipe Band of the Republic of Ireland is not considered officially and overseas band, and thus does not pre-qualify, even though it placed fifth at the British Championships.
St. Laurence O’Toole tied with Vale of Atholl in aggregate points, but the tie was broken by placings in ensemble at the two championships.
Six bands from the March, Strathspey & Reel qualifying section held on the morning of August 17 will go through to the 14 band final, which comprises an MSR (submit two) and a Medley (own choice).
