SFU Provides Details on Sydney Opera House Concert

The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, has announced details of its April 11, 2001 concert and live recording at the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia.

Along with the band itself, several special guests will perform, including the SFU Dance Team, and recording artists Anna Schaad and David MacVittie. Known as America’s premier five string electric viola player, Anna Schaad specializes in Celtic and blues music, while multi-instrumentalist David MacVittie accompanies her on bouzouki and guitar.

Following the Sydney event, the band will perform in Melbourne, Australia, for a concert at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Center on April 13. The band will then compete at the Australian Pipe Band Championships on April 14 and 15.

“This is a big step for SFU and for piping,” said Jack Lee, Pipe Sergeant of SFU. “We will be the only pipe band ever to headline a concert at either New York’s Carnegie Hall or the Sydney Opera House. Pipe Bands have come a long way. Also, this is probably the most expensive trip ever undertaken by a non-military pipe band with a budget well into six figures.”

Tickets for the Sydney show are available through Ticketek or from www.sfupipeband.com.
