Schedule for 2003, ’04 RSPBA Majors (updated)

The schedule for 2003 and ’04 Royal Scottish Pipe Band Associations (RSPBA) pipe band championships that Piper & Drummer Online acquired were incorrectly supplied by the association.

The dates below are correct, and those that changed from the original story are highlighted in italics.

2003

  • Scottish Championships – Dumbarton, Scotland – May 17
  • British Championships – Pitlochry, Scotland – June 21
  • World Championships – Glasgow Green – August 16
  • Cowal Championships – Dunoon, Scotland – August 30
  • European Championships – Alden Biesen, Belgium – September 13

    2004

  • Scottish Championships – Dumbarton, Scotland – May 22
  • British Championships – Turriff, Scotland – June 12
  • European Championships – Lisburn, Northern Ireland – July (date TBD)
  • World Championships – Glasgow Green – August 14
  • Cowal Championships – Dunoon, Scotland – August 28

The RSPBA has been heavily criticized in the past for scheduling major championships at times only weeks before the event, leaving bands scrambling to make arrangements or even deciding not to attend.

“The RSPBA is really doing some excellent things,” said one observer. “They are listening to the membership and learning from some of the mistakes of the past.”

The World Championships are booked for Glasgow for the next decade, apparently, because of an agreement struck with Glasgow City Council several years ago. Many believe that a true “world” championship should change country each year or even occasionally.
