ScottishPower ‘Tunes of Glory’ Event Attracts Over 10,000 Players

New York – April 6, 2002 – The ScottishPower Pipe Band followed actor Sean Connery and mayor Michael Bloomberg in what is thought to be the largest massed pipe band in history, with over 10,000 piper and drummers participating in the ScottishPower “Tunes of Glory” march for cancer research.

The event was held on “National Tartan Day” in the United States, made official in 1998 as a day when Americans are encouraged to celebrate their Scottish roots. The date was chosen because it coincides with the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320.

Organizers hoped to raise over $1 million for cancer charities. Fundraising occurred by bands soliciting sponsorships, a fundraising gala, and corporate donations.

The ScottishPower band also performed a concert in New York on April 4, with proceeds going to victims of September 11.
