Southern Cross Pipe Band

The Southern Cross Pipe Band

The Southern Cross Pipe Band was formed in 1991 by a handful of like-minded friends sharing the passion for the Highland bagpipe, in Montevideo, capital city of Uruguay in South America. In the beginning just a wishful dream, the project evolved throughout the years and has become a full 30-member band including pipers, drummers and highland dancers, performing in almost all English-speaking community events.

Such formidable effort in such a far flung part of the world and away from the competitive and tuition circuit was not easy at all. Nevertheless and with a careful approach to learning and improving technique, the band has achieved a special blend of friendship, effort and discipline, which has proved paramount to the band’s success.

Southern Cross has not had the chance to compete, although plans have already been made to do so in the near future.

A few years ago the band realized it had reached a point where the need for specialized tuition and guidance was critical. Among the instructors who have made the trip to Uruguay to teach the band are PPBSO and RSPBA judge Bob Worrall, Tyler Fry of the 78th Fraser Highlanders) and Carleigh Leighton, juvenile dancing champion.

Very proud of its achievements and with a very respectful and careful approach to piping, the Southern Cross Pipe Band works very hard to learn and improve.
