Sutherland Wins First U.S. Silver Medal

Kansas City, Missouri – January 18, 2003 – The first annual Midwest Highland Arts Fund & Midwest Pipe Band Association United States Silver Medal Piobaireachd Competition was won here today by Kenneth Sutherland of California against of field of 24 other North American competitors.

1st Kenneth Sutherland, Menlo Park, California, “Flame of Wrath for Patrick Caogach”
2nd Lyric Todkill, Pittsburgh, “MacLeod’s Controversy”
3rd Jeremy Freeman, Houston, “Lament for Mary MacLeod”
4th Douglas MacRae, London, Ontario, “Lament for Mary MacLeod”
5th Andrew Bonar, Surrey, British Columbia, “Lady Anapool’s Lament”
Judges: Mike Cusack, Jack Lee

The event was sponsored by Newcastle Brown Ale, and the contest was well attended by listeners and at some points had standing room only.

“This was a grand event that had a high standard of play,” Jack Lee commented. The winner receives a silver medal and US$500, and will play at “Winter Storm II: The Pipes and Drums Concert.”
