The end of the road with Pipes & Sticks on Route 66

Day 12:

By Stuart Liddell

Had an excellent night’s sleep at the Norwegian-owned Stagecoach Inn on Route 66 in Seligman, Arizona. This place was different from the norm in that each room was decorated with a different theme – mine was based on John Wayne, Willie had Marylyn Munro and someone else had the U.S. Marines.

Before we hit the road, we paid a visit to a Route 66 legend – Mr. Angel Delgadillo who was 85 today. (It was also Willie’s birthday although 2 or 3 years younger.) Happy birthday was played on the pipes and then he welcomed us into his shop. This man, who seemed to be very happy, full of life and a content person, is known as the “Guardian Angel of Route 66,” and is one of the driving forces behind reviving and preserving the historic route. Oh, and he is a semi-retired barber and Willie and I had an appointment for a shave – cut-throat razor style! I had been cultivating my whiskers for over a week . . .
