Todd Bar Recital performers confirmed

The four pipers to perform at the 2009 Todd Bar Recital Challenge have been confirmed by organizer Willie McCallum, and the line-up features three pipers familiar to the event and one newcomer.

Angus MacColl and Stuart Liddell of Scotland and Alasdair Gillies of Pittsburgh will return to the contest, while Alan Bevan of Abbotsford, British Columbia, will make his first appearance at the event, which has become one of the major dates on the solo piping calendar.

This year’s event is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, August 13th, at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.

MacColl is the winner of the 2008 Todd Bar competition. Bevan has risen quickly to the very upper-tier of solo piping following his gaining the Highland Society of London’s Gold Medal at the 2008 Northern Meeting.

McCallum indicated that the event will take the familiar format in which pipers perform for 25-30 minutes and must include a march, strathspey & reel and the ground of a piobaireachd in their selection. He added that tickets will be available “soon.”

The Todd Bar Recital Challenge is one of several piping and drumming events that will be scheduled at the university during the week prior to the World Pipe Band Championships on August 15th at Glasgow Green.
