Updated: Piobaireachd Society announces 2007 set tunes

The Piobaireachd Society has announced the piobaireachds set for the major competitions in 2007, including the Northern Meeting and Argyllshire Gathering. The organization has designated tunes to be submitted for the Highland Society of London Gold Medals, the Clasp and the Silver Medals for the last 100 years.

Senior (Clasp, Sr. Piobaireachd)

  • “The Bells of Perth,” published in the Piobaireachd Society Collection [PS] book 2, and The Kilberry Book of Ceol Mor [K])
  • “Lament for the Duke of Hamilton,” PS 3 & K
  • “Good Health to You, Donald,” PS 13
  • “Lament for Hugh,” PS 13
  • “The Red Speckled Bull,” PS 4 & K
  • “Scarce of Fishing,” PS 3 & K

    Competitors must submit four and play one.

    Gold Medal

  • “The Battle of Waternish,” PS 2 & K
  • “Lady Margaret MacDonald’s Salute,” PS 3 & K
  • “Lachlan MacNeill Campbell’s Fancy,” PS 8 & K
  • “Lament for Donald Duaghal MacKay,” PS 13 & K
  • “Lord Lovat’s Lament,” PS 9 & K
  • “MacNeill of Barra’s March,” PS 10
  • “The Prince’s Salute,” PS 1 & K
  • “Rory MacLeod’s Lament,” PS 11

    Competitors must submit four and play one.

    Silver Medal

  • “The Bicker,” PS 4 & K
  • “Castle Menzies,” PS 8
  • “The Groat,” PS 1 & K
  • “The MacGregors’ Salute,” PS 10
  • “The Parading of the MacDonalds,” PS 7 & K
  • “Lament for MacSwan of Roaig,” PS 1 & K
  • “Lament for the Viscount Dundee,” PS 1 & K
  • “MacLeod of Raasay’s Salute,” PS 8 & K

    Competitors must submit four and play one.

    The organization stresses that “competitors are not restricted to the settings or styles in the books mentioned above, and may play any other setting or style, provided that the judges may take into consideration the authenticity and merits of the setting or style submitted.”

    The Piobaireachd Society declined to comment on how the tunes were selected, distinctive features of the lists, or whether “own choice” lists were considered this year.
