Updated: SFU Confirmed to Compete, Perform at Maxville

The 2001 World Pipe Band Champions, Simon Fraser University (SFU), have confirmed that they will attend the 2002 Glengarry Highland Games at Maxville, Ontario, in August.

The band will perform at the event’s massive tattoo on Friday, August 2nd, and then compete for the North American Championship the following day.

The last time that SFU attended Maxville was in 1981, and the band has to date not returned to defend its title. It is not known whether the band will fly from eastern Canada to Glasgow for the World Pipe Band Championships, or make a return trip home before embarking on Scotland.

It was also reported that the 78th Fraser Highland Pipe Band had considered missing Maxville so that the band could instead appear at the Festival Interceltique in Lorient, France, the world’s biggest Celtic arts festival. The 78th Frasers have cancelled those plans, and will compete at Maxville.

Some 2500 miles separate Vancouver, SFU’s base city, and Ottawa, the closest major airport to Maxville. The flight lasts more than five hours.
