Antigonish calling for alumni to gather for 150th

Nova Scotia Antigonish Highland Games, one of the world’s oldest and longest-running piping, drumming and pipe band competitions, is marking its 150th anniversary with a call to all pipers and drummers who ever appeared at the event to gather in July to mark the occasion.

Organizers plan to attract as many pipers and drummers as possible for a massed march down the street of the historical town on July 13th, culminating in an entrance to the games park. If they prefer, participants don’t even have to wear the usual Highland garb, and drums will be provided to those who might not have one in tow.

The games have been held at the same location since 1863 when Scottish immigrants held the first official Highland Gathering. The event is one of many that organizers are planning for the week-long festival, culminating in the weekend games that include competitions across all grades.

The competitions are sanctioned by the Atlantic Pipe Band Association.

  1. I’m curious. Does anyone know when Antigonish first held a pipe band contest (as opposed to solo piping, etc)? Hoping someone knows the answer – Stephen Matthews
