Calgary Stampede band forming for Canada 150

As part of Canada’s 150th anniversary of confederation in 2017, pipers and drummers for a special band are being recruited to perform in July in Calgary at one of the country’s most famous events.

The Calgary Stampede Sesquicentennial Pipe & Drums will be made up of available players from across the country, and recruitment will start soon with a band being ready to play during the week of the Calgary Stampede in Calgary July 7-16.

“The hope is to have a band large enough to perform at various events throughout the week including the Stampede Parade, events on Park, and our annual marching band competition at McMahon Stadium,” said Sheldon Wilton, vice chair of the Visiting Bands Committee of the Calgary Stampede. “Our call is going out nationwide, to gather members from across the county in an attempt to have each province and territory represented.”

Additional details about the recruitment process were not immediately available, but stay tuned to pipes|drums for more information.

The Calgary Stampede is a 10-day rodeo, exhibition and festival held that bills itself as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.” More than a million visitors attend each year.
