Donald MacLeod Memorial Champ: Willie McCallum

Stornoway, Scotland – April 10, 2015 – The twenty-second annual Donald MacLeod Memorial Invitational Piping Competition was won by Willie McCallum of Bearsden, Scotland. McCallum enjoyed the best overall success by taking firsts in the Piobaireachd and MSR events, the two events that count towards the aggregate prize. Gordon McCready of Renfrew, Scotland, won the Jig event. The event pays tribute to the late, great MacLeod, and his compositions are featured throughout the events.

The event introduced a new trophy for second prize in the Piobaireachd contest donated in memory of the late Scott MacAulay, one of the most accomplished Canadian pipers of all time. MacAulay’s family came from the Isle of Lewis.

Judges for all events were Iain MacFadyen, Willie Morrison and John Wilson.

Douglas Murray and Gordon Walker withdrew from the event the day before. The contestants each gladly played an air and a 6/8 march as an unjudged performance to make up for the spare time.
