pipes|drums New Year’s Honours add People’s Choice format

Following the overwhelming success and popularity of the “people’s choice” format for awarding the 2008 Hosbilt Cup to the bass-section of the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band via the magazine’s online poll, the sixth annual pipes|drums New Year’s Honours will take a similar format in 2008.

Starting in December, the award categories and nominees will begin to be posted on the magazine’s poll. As with the mid-section award, voting will be limited as much as possible by Internet protocol address, to dissuade attempts at vote-stuffing.

“pipes|drums is a magazine for, about and by pipers and drummers, so the People’s Choice format represents that spirit perfectly,” said Andrew Berthoff, pipe|drums’ editor. “The success of the 2008 Hosbilt Trophy system made this new format a natural progression. We look forward to hearing from our many thousands of readers around the world, and we encourage them to tell their friends to vote, too.”

People’s Choice categories will be:
  • Piper of the Year
  • Solo Competition Piper of the Year
  • Drummer of the Year
  • Pipe Band of the Year
  • Recording of the Year
Starting on December 1, each category will run for at least five days. Results will be kept confidential until January 1, 2009.

In addition to the People’s Choice Awards, the traditional experts’ awards will also be made, decided by a panel of leading pipers and drummers from around the world.
