pipes|drums adds Michael Grey recital to Wednesday Piping Live! Street Caf¨¦

As part of pipes|drums Magazine’s sponsorship of the Street Café marquee tent at the National Piping Centre at 1:15 pm on Wednesday, August 10th, a 45-minute solo recital by Michael Grey has been added. As with the previously announced “Pipes+Drums” hour-long session, the recital is free to all.

In what is believed to be a first for world piping, the entire recital will comprise entirely the compositions of the performer. Grey has been composing bagpipe music since his teens, and has published five collections so far.

“I’m planning to play tunes from the repertoire I’ve made myself,” Grey said. “I’m looking forward to playing some tunes that I’ve never actually memorized and played in public before – and hope that’s the right thing to do!”

In addition to the live performance, Grey will provide free CDs for those attending the recital, with each disc containing the scores of all of the tunes played. “People can follow along on their laptops or iPads and count grace notes to their heart’s content – what could be more fun?”

Although Grey has competed hundreds of time as a soloist in Scotland, it will be his first full-length recital in that country. The Michael Grey recital precedes “Pipes+Drums,” which begins at 2 pm and continues for an hour.

The 2 pm Pipes+Drums event plays off of the pipes|drums theme, bringing four Grade 1 Pipe-Majors and their Leading-Drummers. On the bill are:

  • P-M Stuart Liddell and L-D Steven McWhirter – Inveraray & District

  • P-M Chris Armstrong and L-D Barry Wilson – ScottishPower

  • P-M Stewart McKenzie and L-D Graeme Parker – Manawatu Scottish

  • P-M John Cairns and L-D Graham Brown – Peel Regional Police

Pipes+Drums is also completely free, and no fewer than five World Solo Drumming Championships and five Highland Society of London Gold Medals, and countless other solo and band prizes are represented among the eight performers.

Throughout the Wednesday Street Café, those attending will have a chance to receive free pipes|drums merchandise and win several valuable prizes donated by sponsors.

Both events are part of pipes|drums nonprofit policy, with all funds from subscriptions and advertising dedicated to the development of the magazine, marketing and sponsorship opportunities with an aim of giving back to the piping and drumming world.
