The 2017 season: questions, questions . . .

Question  6: Powering up?

ScottishPower seems to have served enough time in that weird way that pipe band judges insist on putting bands through before they give them the nod. Chris Armstrong took over the band in 2005, and it’s been two years since Jake Jørgensen was made lead-drummer, and they’ve been bridesmaids at the World’s twice in the last seven years, slipped a bit, then came back strong in 2016. During Armstrong’s tenure the band has established itself as one of the more progressive musically, despite attempts by out-of-touch judges and unctuous busybodies to suppress their music. Is this the year that all the “pay your dues” nonsense excuses put on ScottishPower is finally cast aside?

Question  7: Will Fife fly?

It’s a rare thing when the band that finishes sixth at the World’s is the subject of almost as much talk as the winner, but when Police Scotland Fife got into the list last year, that’s pretty much what happened. This is a band on the ascent, with a committed pipe section, strong drum corps, and leaders with a clear vision. What’s more, it seems that many are rooting for Fife Police to continue their trend upwards. These days, in Grade 1, unseating the dominant bands in the upper tier can feel almost impossible, but this is a band that seems to be doing it right, with a local approach, representing the Kingdom of Fife. It will be interesting to see the dogfight with new contenders for titles.
