Holding it together enough to win a Highland Society of London Gold Medal once is a great feat; doing it twice in the same year is history-making. Dougie Murray had been chapping on the door for years, and the Fifer put it all together in 2014 to become only the eleventh piper in history to achieve the pure Double.

Also considered (alphabetical order):

  • Bruce Gandy – the Dartmouth, Nova Scotia-based piper won the Senior Piobaireachd at the Argyllshire Gathering and the Gillies Cup Open Piobaireachd at London, among many other prizes, to highlight another excellent year.
  • Stuart Liddell – the Silver Star MSR at the Argyllshire Gathering, the Masters at Piping Live!, and his second Glenfiddich Championship rounded out another great year for the Inveraray piping savant.
  • Craig Sutherland – another double, this time winning both A-Grade light music events at Oban – maybe the first time that’s ever happened – made the young Perthshire native a standout piper in 2014.

  1. Always love this year end wrap and seeing the best recognised. Glad that it is not always all about prizes won but also about other accomplishments to piping and drumming. Well done all!!!
